Geographical Position
Geographically , Uruguay is situated in the southern subtropical zone of the South American Continent, its eastern frontier being located on the Atlantic Coast. Topographically, it is located in the transition area from the Brazilian plateaux to the Pampean plains . The Northern and the North-Eastern frontiers separating Uruguay from Brazil follow natural geographical lines . Uruguay is separated from Argentina by the Rio de la Plata in the South and by the Rio Uruguay in the west. The Eastern frontier is the Atlantic Ocean . Uruguay is one of the smallest country in Latin America . It covers an area of some 72,178 square miles , with a 500km coast line of beach along the Atlantic Ocean and the River Plate . It's capital is Montevideo. The population is approximately 3 million people .
History (Brief)
Uruguay was a spanish possession until 1811 when it became part of the River Plate Provinces . Full independence was achieve in 1825 . Uruguay's executive power is comprised of the President and his Cabinet . Parliment is composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives . The judicial branch is headed by an independent Supreme Court of Justice .
Culture
Uruguay; Has given the world many men of letter, thinkers, painters, sculptors and musicians whose worksare widely admired. Space does not allow of a complete list, but one cannot refer to the subject without citing a few names: Bartolome Hidalgo, Juan Zorrilla de San Martin, Jose Enrique Rodo, Carlos Vaz Ferreira, Julio Herrera y Reissing, Maria Eugenia Vaz Ferreira, Juana de Ibarbourou ( Juana de America ) are only some of the most important poets , thinkers and writers; Juan Manuel Blanes, Pedro Figari, Joaquin Torres Garcia, and Jose Cuneo must be mentioned among painters ; Jose Luis Zorrilla de San Martin and Jose Belloni are among the best sculptors; Dalmiro Costa, Tomas Garibaldi, Luis Sambucetti and the great master Eduardo Fabini are some of the great names of Uruguayan music .
